Plateaus and Penninsulas

Today we are learning about plateaus and peninsulas. A plateau is a high flat area that rises steeply above the surrounding land. In other words a mountain with a flat top. One example of a plateau is the Grand Canyon. A peninsula is a body of land mostly surrounded by water, usually 3 sides. One of the USA's peninsulas is the state Florida. One of Canada's famous peninsulas is the Joan Peninsula.

  1. Brandt,

Thanks for taking the time to provide such a wealth of information. I was wondering if you thought about allowing your readers, to post pictures that they have personally taken, as examples of the geography you have been describing?
    Keep up the good work!

  2. Brandt,
I was just thinking about the Grand Canyon. It has many landforms, right? The deep part is a canyon, the flat areas at the top are plateaus, and cliffs on the sides! Wow...three landforms at one location! Do you know how the Grand Canyon was formed? Check out this video... http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/channel/videos/the-grand-canyon-story/ Boy, this really makes me want to take you on a road trip! Keep working hard and learning lots! I'm proud of you! Mom

  3. Hi Brant!
I really enjoyed your blog. I can tell that you have put a lot of time and effort in creating your page. I can think of a Peninsula that I grew up around. It is located in Pennsylvania and surround by one of the Great Lakes. I also used to live in Colorado. One summer I visited a park west of Vail and biked on the “Slickrock” trail. I was wondering if you would be able to remind of the names of these two cities as well as the name of the Great Lake and Peninsula in PA.
Thanks for the information! Dr. Hartzell

  5. Great facts about peninsulas. I know you like to vacation in Sea Isle City. There is a peninsula near there where Papa spent his summers when he was your age. Do you know the name of that one? They have "Cape May diamonds" there.

  6. After reading the information above, I realized that I have walked on a peninsula and a plateau. When I was in Ireland, I traveled around the Dingle Peninsula to see the coastline. I also climbed around the highlands in Scotland. It's amazing how steep the sides are and how soggy the land can be on top! Thanks for helping me to make that connection!
